💙New favorite writing spot 💙

So, gotta say, writing EXILES has been an enlivening process. This story is a sci-fi thriller that has murder/mystery elements, something we’ve never done before. It’s been fun to challenge ourselves to tap into different parts of our storytelling—feel around, explore, maybe flex a little—and discover muscles we didn’t even know we had 🦾

That’s one of the reasons we love writing so much... there’s *always* more to discover if you hold tight to your curiosity.
...

We went to ground these past few weeks trying to push through the first half of Act II of Exiles ... finally came out to feel some of that sweet sun on our faces🌞 We are about to dive into some serious action scenes, our *favorite* thing to write.

Also, we’ve walked over 60 miles so far outlining this story! Almost over the crest of this manuscript mountain 🏔📚☺️

Act ll, the dreaded middle, the great expanse, can feel a lot like no-person’s land. As a writer, sometimes it can be way more fun to set up a story, to lay the groundwork of character, setting, and theme, to explore world-building and voice. It can be difficult not to rush through the dreaded no-person’s land, desperate to get to Act lll , where your foot is already on the gas, the thrill of the climax, the action, the END in sight.

But with Act ll, you have to settle in and go deep, patiently carving out your own road, taking turn after turn (maybe a couple of dead-ends), not exactly sure where it will lead. It can be daunting to stay the course and not get lost before you reach the other side. For us, structure and outlining are our guiding lights. We look out at the long, empty stretch before us and smile, loving the challenge. Excited to see where the story and characters will take us next.📚

When people ask us how the writing is going...

Wait what, we have a book due June 1st?? #amwriting 🐾🐾

🌸Happy Spring Forward Day🌸

...but seriously though, on a scale of 1-10, how screwed was everyone this morning? We were at a solid 7. Going to play catch up all day 🙃

Just a writer in her natural habitat🕯👩🏼‍💻 Beat outlining the next chunk of ✨EXILES✨

Outlining is our favorite part of writing— it’s what enables us to always be in-sync as co-authors, plus we get to talk about story all day & play make believe.

Also, as you can see our massive writing candle is making massive progress... ☺️

👀 Looking back 👀

We are finishing up The Midnight Library audible (it’s amazing btw if you haven’t read or listened yet). It deals with the parallel universe theory and we find ourselves getting lost lately thinking about the other versions of us that could be out there. Ones where we aren’t writers.😳Ones where we ended up taking the path that led to other dreams of becoming professional basketball players, tornado chasers, singers, music video directors, WWII historians, or zoologists. Ones where we went down separate paths and didn’t share our lives together. Of all the lives we could have lived (and might be living elsewhere) we’re happy to be living this one. Writing, together.☺️📚

It took millions of years for the forces of erosion to carve out and shape the beautiful and majestic arches in southern Utah. It was a layer by layer process, rain storm after rain storm slowly eroding the rock, winter snowmelt freezing and breaking off chunks of the sandstone, little by little turning the fractured rock into a grand arch. Sometimes it feels like it will take that long to carve out this book. Chipping away at it paragraph by paragraph, page by page, riding storms of inspiration, allowing for times of freeze and doubt, that will, with enough consistency, turn a raw idea into a fully shaped story. We’re starting to see the outlines of what shape EXILES will take and we’re excited to see what its final form will be 📚

You know those days when everything feels perfectly aligned, easy, and you feel that sunlight shining down on you even amongst all those shadows?

Yeah well, today is not that day. This past week things have just felt *off* in every sense of the word. We are people who love a well ordered weekly schedule (especially when we are on deadline) buuuut it just ain’t happening this week.

But hey, there can be order in the chaos, right? Okay, off to find it.

We’ve got our first quarantine/Covid birthday coming up next week—last year’s was at the tail end of the ‘before times’. Instead of throwing parties, every year to celebrate our shared day of birth we go on an adventure together—something we’ve done for the last nine years {yes, we know, you wish you had a twin}. Seems like this year we’ll have to settle for merely traveling within our minds, most likely {most definitely?}, writing on our birthday(s)... which won’t take us very far since EXILES is set in L.A. 😆

Coming up with names for our characters is one of the most fun parts of writing for us. Landing on the perfect name is the first key to unlocking their personalities, their secret pasts and current desires. It kind of feels like a door opening, and once we cross to the other side, the characters speak to *us* rather than us painstakingly trying to control *them*.
👩🏼‍💻
Names usually speak to us right away.
We even name every one of our plants. But FOR THE LIFE OF US we cannot find a name for our “wisdom tree” {as seen here} We got her at our local nursery last spring and she has been nameless ever since.
🌳
Is she speaking to any of you? Anyone have a clever, beautiful, perfect name we can finally christen her?

Our mother thought it was funny/cute to gift us this MASSIVE writing candle. It’s honestly bigger than our dogs 😂 Think it will last us through every draft of EXILES and its sequel?
🕯
It smells like white cypress and sit-your-booties-down-gurrrls-and-FINISH-YOUR-BOOK
🕯
Obviously, the best gift ever. Thanks, Mother, love you 🤍

🍾🤸🏼‍♀️WE GOT ANOTHER BOOK DEAL!!!🍾🤸🏼‍♀️We’re super thrilled to announce our adult debut sci-fi series & to join the 47North team @amazonpublishing 🤗 Couldn’t be more excited about this new story & can’t wait to share more about our latest twin sisters 👯‍♀️ ...

🎧 LEND US YOUR EARS. Well, at least tell us what cool music you’re pumping into them.🎧
🎶
Been having a hard time finding fresh jams to write to. For the Rule Of One series we mostly wrote to low fi beats or chill house music but needing a music makeover for our new story & characters.
🎶
It might be because it’s coming on year two of the pandemic, but we’re wanting moody/atmospheric vibes (preferably w/o lyrics). What soundtracks/playlists/artists are you listening to rn? SOS!
🌺
Also, our bougainvilleas are popping off 😍 We’ve been fertilizing & caring for them like good plant mamas👩🏼‍🌾

Settling back into our home routine, which involves lots of writing, yoga, Yerba mate and dog cuddles. We’re both not the fastest of readers, but when we’re working on a story we fill a lot of our down time with a good book (and audibles now too) to help keep the creative energy flowing.

Genuinely curious, what are you reading? We’ve both been on a historical/fantasy/magic kick. Anyone want to recommend a curveball? 📚

< I S O L A T I O N >

It’s a word and lifestyle we’ve both long felt at home with. As writers, we’ve grown accustomed to being alone for long stretches of time, toiling away at our stories, living mostly inside our minds, within the worlds we create, becoming more bffs with our heroes and antagonist than with our actual real-life friends.

As the anniversary for the most isolated year of our personal lives fast approaches, the feeling of isolation weighs heavier than ever.

In college we were a few credits shy of minoring in history. Being at these Utah national parks and seeing the history of the homesteaders that tried to make a living there in such a rugged climate and in almost total isolation fascinates us. In the mid 1850s a family of THIRTEEN lived in this one room cabin 🤯 They only made it a year before moving on to a bigger community. We guess humans really *do* need social interaction.

Hope to see ya’ll in person some day soon 🤠
